Something big separates him from the protagonist, but nothing that can't be overcome at any given moment. Love at first sight is generally preferable to any kind of courtship or wooing, but the actors playing these characters need to look just painfully desperate to have sex with each other... 3)The Other Boyfriend... One boyfriend is simply not enough, however. There must be two: the actual boyfriend and a slightly weird-looking friend zone "maybe" backup boyfriend. Without the other boyfriend, there is less opportunity to display how desirable the girl is because no one fights over her. Plus, while the fights offer soap opera drama, they also often lead to ripped shirts, which lead to abs, which are very important as well... 4)The Supernatural Twist... Maybe it's vampires. Maybe it's a futuristic game of death. Maybe it's magicians or aliens. Whatever it is, something elevates the film above just everyday concerns. Every teenager thinks their social dramas are the most important things in the world. With the supernatural twist, they finally are... 5)Breaking the Rules... Along with the supernatural twist comes a lot of world-building details and rules. These are important to make clear because all of them will be broken by the protagonist. Not only that, but she'll be challenging these long-standing rules for the first time ever. This not only gives the film a supposedly big ending but asserts the main character's special importance, not just in the mundane world but in the story's heightened supernatural realm as well... 6)The Special Effects... These films are not going to be judged by learned, discerning eyeballs. You can go ahead and save your special-effects budget because no one in your tween female fantasy film's audience is going to judge it based on how good the effects are. Spend that money on what really counts: highly respected British actors out looking for a bit of slumming... 7)The Violence... Romance and relationship drama is fun, but these films need to have a surprising amount of violence as well. Really horrific bloodshed would probably be out of place, but death and danger definitely need to make an appearance. This is only partly inspired by the possibility of tragedy. In reality, a good fight is a good fight, and such a thing can appeal to both genders. It's the stuff around the violence that's different with tween female-fantasy films... 8)The Sacrifice... With such a high premium on drama, few of these films can go with out a big sacrifice. Maybe it's a parental figure. Maybe it's a younger sibling stand-in. But someone has to pay the piper. Luckily, magical get-out-of-jail-free cards can sometimes negate the permanence of these deaths, somehow without negating the emotions those deaths engender. 9)The Sex... Or the lack of it, specifically. Abstinence may be a controversial sex-ed talking point, but it's a common thread between many tween female-fantasy films. No matter how much these characters want to get it on, something separates whether it be family, a homicidal game, body swapping, or plain old chastity... 10)The Happy Ending... You have to have a happy ending, which in these films means not only the fruition and continuation of the protagonist's love, but usually the saving of the human race as well. These are big, epic stories, after all. Hooking a hot girl up with a hot boy is only 99% of what these films are narratively interested in. They're also about us as a people and whether a girl hooking up with a hot boy can save us from ourselves somehow.
